The 2013 Doniene is a selection from their oldest vineyards (up to 20 years of age) of the local white Hondarrabi Zuri grape fermented with indigenous yeasts. An austere, sharp, serious, focused, pure, delineated, clean and mineral Txakoli, it is a soil-driven rather than fruit-driven wine. This is a superb, serious Txakoli that should age well. Drink now-2015.

Doniene Gorrondona is one of the leading producers in the Bizkaiako Txakolina appellation. It’s a winery created in 1996 by four friends who wanted to recover the Txakoli tradition in a farmhouse in Bakio. They now own 15 hectares of vineyards. These are some of the best Txakolis around, full stop.

Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate 213

The 2013 Gorrondona Tinto is a rarity, a red Txakoli produced exclusively with the red local grape Hondarrabi Beltza that fermented with indigenous yeast and went through malolactic in vat. It has an herbal nose, not unlike other Atlantic reds from southwest France or the Loire, a bit wild with some chili pepper and floral notes. It has certain elegance, with fine grained tannins. A red for blue fish? Drink now-2016.

($25) (all hondarrabi zuri, from the estate's oldest vines): Vivid straw color. High-pitched and incisive on the nose, displaying scents of lime zest, pink grapefruit, pear skin and chalky minerals, with a suave floral nuance becoming more pronounced with air. Dry and nervy, offering intense citrus fruit and honeysuckle flavors underscored by zesty minerality. Shows excellent clarity and lift on the finish, which hangs on with outstanding tenacity and repeating florality.

($28) (100% hondarri baltza, from vines that are reportedly over 150 years old, raised in stainless steel):  Vivid ruby.  Intense, spice-accented aromas and flavors of redcurrant and cherry, with mineral, cracked pepper and anise nuances.  Lively and precise on the finish, which leaves zesty mineral and spice notes behind.  Fans of taut, linear Loire Valley red wines will really groove on this.
