Centered on the towns of Utiel and Requena, this is the largest D.O. in the province of Valencia. While most of the wines produced in the Levant are white, to complement the abundant seafood market, the D.O. of Utiel-Requena is known for its red wines or more specifically for its Bobal. Most of the vineyards here, about 80%, are planted with Bobal but new planting of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah have added a new dynamic to the wines in recent years. The soil found here is primarily chalky clay but with some sandy patches.
